2014 Scantic Spring Splash

2014 Scantic Spring Splash

May 9, 2014 By Christopher Moore

This past Sunday kayakers and canoeists gathered at the Powder Mill Barn in Enfield for another edition of the popular down river race known as the Scantic Spring Splash.

About 110 paddlers, mostly from Connecticut and western Massachusetts, took part in the event that had been rescheduled from an earlier date in March.

The event is a timed race down a five mile stretch of the Scantic River that starts in Somerville and ends adjacent to the Powder Mill Barn in Enfield. However, despite being a “race”, the main challenge for most entrants is not going fast but successfully navigating the course’s three separate sets of class II rapids without capsizing.

Known as Stockers Rapids, Chimney Rapids and The Ledges, the rapid sections come at roughly the two, three and five mile points on the course. Rescue personnel, outfitted in helmets and dry suits, were stationed on the riverbank at all three rapid sections and assisted numerous paddlers who became separated from their boats.

Sunday’s event drew the most spectators of any Connecticut white water competition thus far this year. The Ledges rapid, only a few hundred yards up river from the finish is a perfect spot for spectating with a bridge over the river and easily accessible river bank directly next to the rapid’s largest drop. A large crowd of onlookers gathered here to cheer paddlers on as they attempted to descend the section without flipping over.

Racing started 12:00 after all competitors and boats had shuttled from the Powder Mill Barn\Finish Area to the upriver start. The action lasted about two hours as the boats made their way down the course at regular intervals.

Competitors were able to become their own spectators as video from cameras that had been stationed at the three rapid sections was played back on a large screen during the awards presentation in the Powder Mill Barn.

The event was part of the NECKRA Downriver Points Series
